One of the requirements of the scholarship is that students volunteer in the community, finding
volunteer opportunities through the Get Connected platform hosted by the United Way of Mower
County. Our agency has embraced this opportunity, and since its release, has utilized volunteers to
renovate the Seibel Center through painting projects.
We have all been young, and as such have possibly faced rejection due to our age. As we consider opening the doors to our youth, we have to change our mindset to viewing interactions with youth volunteers as opportunities. In doing so, we create the ability to share our acquired wisdom, which can be reciprocated with their talents, curiosity, and generosity. Furthermore, it may increase their self-esteem and reduce feelings of alienation. Lastly, they are provided with a sense of contribution and impact.
As a parent or adult mentor, you can encourage youth volunteering by:
• Identifying skills they want to learn through volunteering
• Exploring their current interests
• Stressing the importance of accountability and follow through
• Having a conversation about advocating for themselves
• Identifying self-care techniques
